Poor air quality causes between 7 and 8 million premature deaths every year (WHO). In most countries, air quality monitoring is conducted sporadically, if at all. With little air quality data, it is difficult to evaluate the potential air quality impacts on a country from various sources, and therefore impacts can be underestimated and leave serious consequences.
The Croatian based SME is developing smart devices in order to analyse, measure, detect, purify and enrich air by using AI, smart sensors, patented filters and modular technology.
The Croatian SME is building research consortium for a Eurostars proposal. Project is based to provide a novel low-cost sensors system that measures 6 main outdoor pollutants and which can operate in wireless sensor networks for urban air quality monitoring; controlled by machine learning recalibration, managed by AI.
The company made a high-level prototype, a novel sensor system that includes specific technology components and low-cost sensors to enable accurate and reliable measurement.
The company is looking for a software development company to join the consortium. Partner is expected to provide their expertise in designing a data management platform containing real-time data processing and data mapping software as well as application.
The main project output will be a completely new, transferable, informative and cost-effective air quality measurement station with a minimal environmental footprint, unlike existing ones. It will benefit local residents, governments, R&D organisations, health and environmental institutions and others.
The partner should be based in one of Eurostars eligible countries. The organisation type is not defined and the company is willing to cooperate with anyone that can provide needed expertise and is willing establish partnership in the form of a Research Cooperation Agreement.
The deadline for the expression of interest is October 24th 2021 and the project duration is 36 months (3 years). The project is expected to start in May 2022.
Advantages & innovations
Existing solutions are either expensive or do not measure all 6 outdoor air pollutants.
The product will measure six main ambient pollutants without cross-sensitivities, in real-time. The novel sensor system is more than 50% reliable and accurate compared to the existing sensors. Recalibration is managed by machine learning. This technical approach leads to an increase in implementation and field of applications. Obtained and collected air quality information will move away from qualifying the data as good or bad, and toward characterizing the exact qualities of the sensor data, including confidence in pollutant concentrations.
An added value is enabling open-access data platforms to impact local communities and environmental justice issues; the results of data analytics and the corresponding findings could find monetary value as well.
